Since my last update, I’ve been doing a lot of referenced pieces. A few of these are from a 1972 Playboy magazine and a few recent issues of DNA. As well, I did a cover recreation of Joe Kubert’s cover to House of Mystery #289. I bought the comic at a flea market, and the composition and color theory behind the piece just spoke to me. You will note a) I am no Kubert and b) I’m not that great at directly reproducing as some characters tilt a little different and so on.
More random stuff from my sketchbook. So far so good on keeping with my New Year’s resolution. Having fun playing with a bunch of new Prismacolors I got on sale. Some of this entry includes Woody Allen, Elvis, a red-penised samurai, a drunk, a chibi Spider-man, a circus performer with no luck and much much more. Hope ya dig!
I (unfortunately) have some downtime between gigs right now. I decided to use the time to visit some of my favorite comic book artists’ websites and blogs to find some ink drawings to color and experiment. Some are results of trying out some odd color theory and some are exercises in restrained hues. I am pretty happy with most of the results. Credit and links to the artists’ blogs are before each set. Hopefully more to come.

Hello, WordPress. I’m Michael E. Wiggam. I’m a comic book colorist, and my past work includes Star Wars: Clone Wars for Dark Horse Comics, Raymond E. Feist’s Magician Master for Marvel Comics, Amber Atoms for Image Comics, R.P.M. for 12 Gauge Comics, and many other small press titles.
This is a personal blog to show of my coloring work and my personal work. Also, for the new year, I decided to use a lot of the art supplies I’ve amassed over the last few years and take up sketching. You’ll notice it’s very random, and I like a few things that show up often — cartoon faces, lemons, pills, and movie monsters.
For my coloring work, I exclusively use a Wacom tablet with Adobe Photoshop. For my personal work, I use mechanical pencils, Pental small tip and brush pens (both black and sepia), Prismacolor markers (especially my cool grey set), colored pens, watercolor pencils, Pentel aquash set, and whatever else I can get a hold of!
